Ulf Löfgren

Ludde was created by the author and illustrator Ulf Löfgren (1931-2011) in Sweden 30 years ago. What were the thoughts behind the books and the character?

Ulf himself said the following in a radioprogram in Swedish National Radio 2008 called ”The classic” about Ludde:

”It is in the imagination one can feel truly free. The children can amuse themselves by entering another world, which becomes a sort of nest of their own and thus you  break a barrier of reality. It is very good for you to experience this freedom and the sense of participation. In the books about Ludde a repetition often occurs, a classic element in children’s books, children need to feel at home and be able to identify themselves in the books. These are books that can bring joy to all and enables the children to get used to books, hopefully good books. My mission is to amuse and entertain. Children will get a good start in life by getting familiar with books, always reading – it is an asset.”

In total there are 34 books about Ludde. The format is designed in purpose for the parent and child to have a reading experience together, a calm moment bringing them closer to one another. The main target group is children two – three years of age.

These are ideas about Ludde declared by Ulf Löfgren:

”The aim with the books about LUDDE is to tell stories for the smallest children in a way that speaks directly to them. My intention with LUDDE is that he with his mimic and body language
can express thoughts and feelings as clearly that also small children can understand and identify themselves with him.

I have very consciously chosen a rabbit as an actor since his physiognomy gives me the pictorial opportunity to elaborate particularly vivid facial expressions. The slogan of the serie is ”Humor for little people” . With that phrase I want to underline the ambition to firstly amuse the children, turn to their sense of humor and give them an opportunity to laugh. I am trying to mediate funny circumstances in the everyday life, especially events that are related to situation comedy. The books represents a combination of surprises and repetitions – these repeptions are very intentional as children in this age have a certain sense for repetition effect. Often I try to give a sort of moral to the story. The stories are understandably enough very simple without any complications. That does not prevent the books from delivering pedagogical knowledge, in addition. To elaborate the children’s ability to fantasize and to stimulate them to fantasy play of their own is a keynote in all the Ludde books. In spite of the imaginative I obviously try to ground Ludde from a psychological point of view. The importance to activate the children is also important in the books, sometimes this motivates direct questions and appeals to the children.”

Ludde såg dagens ljus 1984 alltså för 30 år sedan i år. Vad var då tankarna bakom Luddeböckerna?

Så här sa Ulf själv i radioprogrammet Klassikern i kulturradions P1 som sändes 2008 om Ludde:

”Det är i fantasin som man känna sig riktigt fri. Barnen får roa sig genom att komma in i en annan värld, de får ett liksom ett eget bo, på så vis bryter man en verklighets-barriär. Det är nyttigt att få uppleva den här friheten och känslan av att vara med. I Luddeböckerna sker ju ofta en upprepning något som är en klassiker i barnböcker, barn måste känna sig hemma och identifiera sig med böckerna. Det går inte att komma ifrån att Luddeserien är apart i min produktion, säger Ulf Löfgren, det var ett infall på 80-talets början. Det här är ju böcker som alla har glädje av och i fortsättningen vänjer barn vid böcker, förhoppningsvis goda böcker. Min uppgift är att roa, att underhålla. Barn ska få en god början på sitt liv att vänja sig vid böcker, att alltid läsa böcker – det är en tillgång.”

Och så här beskriver han tillblivelsen av Ludde:

”Syftet med bokserien om LUDDE är att berätta för de allra minsta barnen på ett sätt som talar direkt till dem. Min avsikt med LUDDE är att han med sin mimik och sitt kroppsspråk
skall kunna uttrycka tankar och känslor så tydligt och tolkningsbart att även mycket små barn skall kunna förstå honom och identifiera sig med honom.

Jag har mycket medvetet valt en liten kanin som aktör eftersom hans fysionomi ger mig tillfälle att bildmässigt utveckla ett särskilt livligt minspel och därmed en särpräglad ”personlighet”.
Seriens slogan lyder ”Humor för små människor”. Med den formuleringen vill jag understryka att ambitionen i första hand varit att roa barnen, vända mig till deras humoristiska sinne och ge dem tillfälle att skratta. Jag försöker förmedla roliga detaljer ur det vardagsnära livet, gärna situationskomiska händelser. Böckerna utgör en blandning av överraskningar och upprepningar – dessa upprepningar är mycket avsiktliga eftersom barn i dessa åldrar har ett särskilt sinne för upprepningseffekter.
Ofta försöker jag att ge berättelsen någon form av sensmoral. Berättelserna är givetvis av lättförståeliga skäl mycket enkla och utan komplikationer. Det hindrar inte att böckerna ofta förmedlar pedagogiska kunskaper, så att säga på köpet.
Att utveckla barnens fantasiförmåga och stimulera dem till egna fantasilekar är en grundtanke i samtliga LUDDE-böcker. Trots fantasifullheten så försöker jag förstås verklighetsförankra LUDDE från psykologisk synpunkt.
Betydelsen av att barn skall aktiveras finns också som genomgående grundtanke i hela bokserien, ibland motiverar detta direkta frågor och uppmaningar till barnen.”
